We don't rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training.
Nov 02, 2023A bit cynical? That was my first thought too when I stumbled upon this saying in a recent podcast. It struck a chord, and though it made me wince initially, I couldn't shake it off. It kept buzzing in my head, demanding attention. 🦟
As I pondered more, I realized that there is a profound chunk of truth hidden in these words. It’s a reminder, albeit a stingy one, of the real game-changer in times of challenge and uncertainty.
In the heat of the moment, when faced with adversity, we instinctively revert to what is ingrained in us. Our training, our practiced skills, and our learned responses take the front seat. It’s rarely the moment for theoretical knowledge or unpracticed wisdom.
📚 So, what’s the takeaway? Perhaps, it’s a nudge to revisit that stack of books, to engage more deeply in continuous learning, and to train ourselves not just for the expected, but also for the unexpected.
Let’s embrace the grind, invest in our personal and professional development, and remember that our level of preparation determines our performance when it counts the most.
PS. The quote, as best as I could determine , is attributed to Archilochus.
